High Tech/High Touch
John Naisbitt

Avg. Customer Review: *****

A brilliant and important book, 28 November, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from London
John Naisbitt and his collaborators have again scored a bulls-eye with their penetrating understanding of some of the key trends that are driving society today. Although the worst symptoms of living in a Technologically Intoxiacted Zone have not yet reached the UK, the book acts as an essential wake-up call. We are conditioned to believe that "'Technology is morally neutral" or that "all improvements in technology are good" and the moral and cultural debris resulting from these dangerous confusions are everywhere. The Nasibitts are not at all luddite, but argue powefully for the necessity of discernment. They also draw our attention forcefully to the megatrend of High Tech High Touch - the deep need for 'High Touch' in people's lives to counterbalance 'High Tech'.

Partnering Intelligence:
Creating Value for Your Business by Building Smart Alliances

by Stephen M. Dent

Avg. Customer Review: *****

Smart Partnering Works, January 25, 2000
Reviewer: Bill Cunningham from North Palm Beach, Florida
I liked Partnering Intelligence for three main reasons: 1. I believe the principles Steve Dent espouses. I think they are true and I know they can work. 2. I appreciate the clear examples used throughout the book to show how the ideas are translated into the workplace. 3. The many tools and assessments that Steve includes are a great model of his own desire to partner with the reader by offering practical ways that the ideas can be put into practice by others.

I know that I will be using the materials in this book to good effect in my consulting work over the next few years. Thanks to Steve for his hard work in putting together this excellent field-guide to building effective partnerships.

Customer Centered Products:
Creating Successful Products Through Smart Requirements Management

by Ivy F. Hooks, Kristin A. Farry

Avg. Customer Review: *****

***** At Last--A Requirements Book for Managers!, November 21, 2000
Reviewer: Ralph Young from McLean, VA USA
This book will help managers save time, money, and schedule on development projects. It contains practical advice based on lessons learned on real projects. For example, data are provided that show that spending more effort on emerging the real requirements rather than simply using the customer's stated requirements can reduce costs by half! The authors recommend specific actions managers can take. They provide a set of useful checklists and suggestions for how to apply them. For example, what is the manager's role in developing good requirements? How can a project prioritize requirements so that resources are allocated consistently with real customer needs and expectations? How can important practices such as recording the rationale for each requirement, identifying and managing interfaces, and considering verification during requirements definition be implemented effectively? Hooks and Farry, both seasoned practitioners, have provided a valuable roadmap to help managers develop customer-centered products. The book is easy to read and the recommendations are easy to apply.

Product Leadership: Creating and Launching Superior New Products
by Robert G. Cooper, Robert Gravlin Cooper

Avg. Customer Review: ****

***** A detailed but highly customizable process for new products, March 8, 1999
Reviewer: Dr Elizabeth Patton (epatton@kodak.com) from Rochester, N.Y.
The value of this book lies in two major aspects. Cooper is a world expert at the product development process, and focuses on the elements needed to make that process successful (rather than just explicating the steps). He does this by pointing our the critical sucess factors. Six of these focus on the process elements that are necessary, and seven more focus on critical elements for execution. However, just as important, Cooper makes use of his vast background in consulting and his knowledge of the workings of many companies, and fills the book with commentary on the usage and limitations of the process, using examples from real companies, and "Key Points for Management. He is one of the few consultants who has developed a process who also teaches the reader how to make it valuable to his own needs.

SureTrak Project Manager 3.0
Primavera Systems

Avg. Customer Review: *****
(Avg. Customer Review for Microsoft Project 2000: **)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Aimed at those who won't put up with limits in their project management software, Primavera SureTrack 3.0 provides an excellent all-around package for getting control of time, resources, and budget. With excellent built-in Web and collaborative capabilities, this is a program that can simplify any busy manager's life.

To get started, SureTrack 3.0 bundles the KickStart tool, which lets even those new to project management software get going productively. In testing, this wizard asked us a series of questions about project phases, goals, people, potential obstacles, and the like, with extensive help from a built-in library of sample entries for many different industries. (If you have been using Microsoft Project, SureTrack supports importing and exporting to .MPJ files, which is another way to start.)

SureTrack features extensive support for the two traditional views for tracking a project: Gantt charts, which show a time line of various tasks, and PERT charts, which show logically connected diagrams of tasks along with dependencies. We liked the support for distributing a variety of reports over the Web using HTML. The product also allows managers to e-mail reports to other team members, plus you can add hyperlinks to any report or view.

Another notable feature included here is the ability to define custom resources (for instance, costs per employee, based on skill sets and project roles), "activity codes," and even specialized calendars. The control over costs in SureTrack is certainly one of the product's strengths. You can track every cost associated with a project and see exactly where you are with your budget at any point within the project cycle.

Finally, at a time when most printed manuals are being downsized in favor of online help, we appreciated the SureTrack's 500 pages of tutorials and documentation. Overall, Primavera's product delivers a well-thought-out project management package, one that can be used effectively by beginner and expert alike to track even large projects effectively. --Richard Dragan

The Six Sigma Revolution [E-BOOK: ADOBE READER]

Avg. Customer Review: *****

*****  A Fantastic Introduction to Six Sigma, 20 December, 2001
Reviewer: A reader from England
I decided to look into Six Sigma as a part of an ongoing project for continuous improvement at work. I got this book with caution thinking like many other books you read - by the time I reached the end I still wouldn't really understand the theory. How wrong? This is a fantastic book, Eckes describes everything in an easily understandable language and uses life expereinces to explain situations. Eckes' background in pschology plays a perfect role in detailing the human elements of Six Sigma as well as the theory. He details the DMAIC steps on a good level and shows the sigma equations and charts clearly so even the SPC novices, like me, will be able to use them.

I now feel confident on the principles of Six Sigma and look forward to implementation at work. If your looking for an introduction to Six Sigma this is the one! Well done to George Eckes for such a good read.
